Cititour Review:
In need of a quick pick-me-up, I soon found myself at the new Big Gay Ice Cream shop. This is the second location for the food truck turned brick-and-mortar. You will find it where Grove Street intersects with Seventh Avenue South, just off Christopher. The corner shop is bright and cheery along with a very helpful staff.
But I was here for ice cream. I quickly zoomed in on the "Salty Pimp." It is one of the shop's top sellers. It starts with a swirl of soft vanilla ice cream piled high on a wafer cone. Then lines of dulce de leche are squirted up and down the sides, followed by a dusting of freshly ground sea salt. The entire thing is then dunked into dark chocolate. Think of it as a Brown Bonnet on steroids. There's even a little surprise awaiting at the bottom of the cone. It's also very, very yummy. And if that's not enough, they even have a cupcake version.
At Big Gay Ice Cream you will also find the Bea Arthur made with crushed 'nilla wafers, a Cococone with toasted curry coconut, and the Mermaid with key lime curd, crushed graham crackers and whipped cream. The flavor of the day on this visit was a vanilla sundae with a mulberry compote.
Big Gay Ice Cream is all sugary sweet sunshine, and they have the unicorns and rainbows to prove it.
