2011 is shaping up as the year of the beer hall. The trend actually began in Brooklyn with Der Schwarze Kohler in Greenpoint, and Loreley in Williamsburg. It's now spreading quickly through the island of Manhattan with the introduction of Bierhaus near Grand Central, Beerparc in the Flatiron District, Beekman Beer Garden Beach Club at South Street Seaport - and now Birreria. Birreria is what you might call an Italian take on a traditional German beer hall. It's located atop the building that houses Eataly, the sprawling Italian market and restaurant mecca on 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue. The space offering spectacular rooftop views of the New York skyline, along with handcrafted beers and ales. In bad weather there's also a retractable roof. All of the beer is brewed on location at the restaurant's own on-site brewery. Cask ales are served through traditional hand pumps in collaboration with Dogfish Head, Baladin and Birra Del Borgo from Borgorose, Italy. While the menu is Italian it draw its influence from Germany and Austria. Hearty fare consisting of house made sausages, pork shoulder and grilled meats served with pickled vegetables and sauerkraut. And just like Eataly's five other restaurants, this spot is already drawing crowds. - Thomas Rafael
