Cititour Review:

If it swims, has a shell or lives by the ocean, it's on the menu at Docks that bills itself in full  as Docks Oyster Bar and Seafood Grill. Convenient to Grand Central, the large (some might say gigantic) space does a roaring trade in biz folks at lunch and after work when groups pour in for happy hour; it was also comfortably filled on a recent Sunday evening. At peak times, the din can overwhelm conversations so Docks is probably not a great first date spot.

My  appetizer wedge salad was topped with the requisite blue cheese dressing (a little light on actual hunks of cheese) and bacon; my companion opted for a plate of steamed broccoli and cauliflower augmented with a side of the dressing as on my wedge. We could have had mussels, crab cakes, shrimp  or crabmeat cocktails first or the New England clam chowder which is reliably delicious and heavy on seafood.

Entrees like the seafood cous cous or the trout stuffed with wild rice are fine and fresh as are lobsters, starting with 1 1/2 pounders, served steamed, broiled, baked, grilled, stuffed  and probably tap dancing. The Maine lobster roll has a generous amount of the good stuff inside and comes with crispy fries; my blue crab California roll was right on the money. There are lots of sushi and sashimi offerings available individually or as platters.

A section of the menu spells out the fried seafood (fish and chips, scallops, and Blue Point oysters among them); fish can also be grilled, blackened or pan seared and comes with good coleslaw. Tuesdays through Saturdays brings a dinner prix-fixe for $38 with three aps, entrees and desserts to select from. For the fish-adverse, there are plenty of steaks including a surf and turf with a one-pound lobster and a filet mignon for $50.

If you want the clambake experience on Third Avenue, it's yours on Sunday and Monday nights starting at 4:30 for $55. For private parties of 20 to 300 with prix-fixe menus, call. Food is attractively plated if not TDF; service is briskly professional and accommodating. A wave brings someone to your side although when the place is jammed it require a little persistence.

Docks is a very corporate spot with entirely reliable food, although it's not going to make seafood aficionados gasp with the brilliance of the chef. If in the area and interested in a good, somewhat pricey meal with an emphasis on the ocean, dive in.
