Cititour Review:
Once inside the East Harlem Café you are sure to find a diverse group of people of all ages and races either meeting up with one another for a quick snack or a full on meal. Upon entering you will notice that the ambiance is warm and inviting. The exposed brick, artwork on the walls and chocolate brown couch nestled against one of the brightly painted windows, all add to the homey décor.
On the day I visited it was a full house but not uncomfortable or tight. And although the wait for my grilled cheese and tomato sandwich and potato and lentil soup was longer than expected, it was well worth the wait. My grilled cheese sandwich was the perfect size and my potato and lentil soup was delicious and hearty, and because my bowl was not filled to the brim, I was given a complimentary chocolate cupcake. How’s that for great service? Content with my grilled cheese and soup, I also had a bite of a turkey sandwich and a sip of a refreshing raspberry tea that was obviously made from fresh raspberries, while the turkey sandwich was a delicious combination of sweet and spicy as it had crisp apple slices in it.
At the East Harlem Café the menu consists of much more than bagels and fancy coffees (although they claim to have “the best coffee in el barrio”). There are unique additions to the menu like mango ceviche, empanadas and Peruvian style mashed potatoes stuffed with shrimp. Not to mention tilapia, skirt steak and chicken Rafael all set at reasonable prices (nothing on the menu is over $12.00) So, next time you are in Harlem, be sure to stop by this spot on the corner of Lexington and 104th Street, you won’t be disappointed.
