It seems as though behind every door in Williamsburg there is an adventure.  The entrance to Forcella, a new Italian spot on Lorimer Street, is a prime example.  From the outside it is just a simple glass door.  No other windows to speak of.  And if you blink you might miss it.  But this is one door you'll want to step inside.

Behind it you will find a lovely restaurant resembling a traditional Italian trattoria.  White walls are adorned with black-and-white photos of old Italian weddings and pizza making.  I think I also spotted a very young Sophia Loren.   The Italian music playing in the background is also a nice touch.   Thick wooden tables and ornate lighting give, what you might expect to be a dark and dreary space, a bright and cheerful look.

The centerpiece of the restaurant is its open kitchen and beautiful wood-burning oven. It covered in cobalt blue tile and is more of a work of art than a mere cooking utensil.   And emerging from that oven are delicious pizzas that have a wonderful crust and smoky flavor.

Each pie is about 12 inches and is cut into four fairly large slices.  Choosing one is difficult.  There are close to twenty varieties and each is more interesting then the next.  The menu begins with a traditional margherita pie with fresh tomato sauce, homemade mozzarella and basil ($15); add  mushrooms, olives, ham and artichoke and you have the Quartieri Spagnoli ($15).  Then there is the Mergellina topped with porcini mushrooms, pesto and bufalo mozzarella.  It also happens to be the most expensive pie ($19).   I was in the mood for a white pizza and picked the Secondigliano ($14).   It turned out to be a excellent choice; a molten mix of mozzarella, paravola, gorgonzola and grana that arrived piping hot.   It was not only wonderful to look but absolutely delicious.

Aside from pizza, Forcella is also serving up an inventive mix of antipasti ranging from a potato cake with ham and cheese to artichokes with olives, tomato and garlic.   Salads can be ordered in two sizes ($7-$14).  You will find a traditional mozzarella, tomato and basil salad alongside calamari livened up with fresh orange, fennel and arugula.   For dessert, homemade tiramisu, a nutella stuffed pizza, chocolate almond cake, and several types of gelato are more than enough to satisfy any sweet tooth. 

Forcella is not your ordinary pizza joint and for that you can be very thankful!
