Cititour Review:

It seems as though most French restaurants in New York are of the overly high-priced kind, which is a shame considering how well simple French food can be made. If you're looking for the perfect croque monsieur (11.50) with real, spicy French mustard, a steak au poivre with brandy sauce (22), served rare, of course, or the café au lait that will take you back to Paris, try the moderately priced French Roast, an Upper West Side staple that has survived the recent closings of many of Manhattan's favorites.

French Roast has two locations, one on Broadway and the other in the West Village, however if you're looking for the true feel of a Paris café, choose French Roast Uptown, which caters to the residential neighborhood that has been its home for years.

Both locations stay true to France via décor and little touches like a special dish of the day (Friday's bouillabaisse (18.50), while served with the untraditional side of linguini, is quite spectacular). One major tip of the hat to New York, however, are the opening hours: French Roast serves delicious French meals all night long.
