Cititour Review:
I love hummus! It’s one of my favorite foods to eat along with freshly baked pita bread for dipping. Considering it tastes so good, yet also nutritious and low in calories, I usually have one or two containers of it in my fridge at all times. But, when I really want the good stuff and don’t want to spend too much money in the process, Hummus Place, with three Manhattan locations, is the place for me to get it.
I recently stopped in at the Saint Mark’s Place location. It’s quite a busy restaurant, but the service is good. Nothing fancy here, just a waiter and hostess running around in jeans and tee shirts making sure their guests are happy. Lunch comes with a nice bottle of water placed on the table and the waiter takes your drink order immediately. I decided on a glass of Israeli white wine and at $4 a glass I couldn’t complain!
If you’re vegan or on a gluten free diet this is the place for you as many items on the menu are marked with a “V” or “GF”. The hummus dishes range from $8 to $12 and are served with hot pita bread or gluten free tortilla chips. Portion sizes are more than satisfying for one, but if you’re sharing with a friend just order more bread. One of my favorites is the Hummus Tahini topped with tahini, olive oil, and spices. It comes with one side. Try the beet and onion vinaigrette salad. It will not disappoint.
The hummus is so delicious here. It’s smooth and creamy with just the right amount of olive oil and spices. They also give you a side of hot sauce called Schug. It’s made with green peppers, garlic, olive oil and lots of cilantro. You can add none or all of it to your hummus depending on how hot you like it. Truthfully though, it’s pretty mild stuff and adding the entire ramekin gives an added kick of flavor.
Also on the menu is an assortment of other Middle Eastern soups, salads, and sandwiches, and a variety of local and Israeli beers and wines. If you have room for dessert try the Malabi, a vanilla flan topped with coconut, roasted almonds, and grenadine. On Saturdays and Sundays a Mediterranean brunch is served for $12.50, but make no mistake… there’s a reason they call this Hummus Place, and that reason is what keeps me coming back.
