It was boy’s night out and my son and I found ourselves face-to-face with a giant skeleton tipping his hat. It's the new Jekyll and Hyde Club, a sprawling restaurant and performance space, in the heart of Times Square. As we approached, a man in a top hat asked if we had the nerve to enter.
Always up for a challenge, we climbed through a door and into a small dark room, and while I don't want to give away what happens next, I will say that our visit was subject to the approval of Mr. Hyde himself who pointed out the way to the restaurant behind a hidden passageway. Let's just say, kids and squeamish adults will love it.
The restaurant itself is a cross between Indiana Jones meets the Frankenstein with shelves filled with skulls and other types of body parts stuffed into jars. The centerpiece is a stage with all sorts of mechanical gears and gizmos lining the wall with a large coffin in the center. A character nearby could have easily doubled for Sherlock Holmes, while the good doctor spent his time looking for blood donors and calling back the dead. Hold onto your seats, and your non-alcoholic cocktails, for the chills and thrills that await.
I must admit that I was impressed with all of the work that went into creating this place from the giant elephant mounted on the wall with a mechanical trunk, to the eerie portraits whose eyes appear to follow your every move, and creepy gargoyles belting out Happy Birthday. Yes, there are a lot of celebrations here and not just for kids. We spotted plenty of adults partaking in the mayhem.
Food at theme restaurants is usually an afterthought, but Hyde's handles it quite well, and prices are fair considering the size of the portions. An order of nachos could easily feed a small army. And while it is not quite gourmet fare, ours were smothered with what looked like melted cheese whiz, they are quite addictive with fresh salsa and pickled jalapenos on top. In fact, we were so full we barely had room left for our entrees; an order of St Louis ribs served with a large crock of baked beans and hand-cut fries, and a California Burger served with large slices of fresh avocado and red onion.
The menu also features individual pizzas, steaks and fried chicken, along with milkshakes and other treats.
Jekyll and Hyde's is a blast, a perfect stop before or after a show, or if you're entertaining a large group.
