From modest beginnings as a food cart in Astoria, King Souvlaki has grown into a full-fledged restaurant serving Greek street foods in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The new space is modern with a sculptured ceiling, exposed brick and industrial elements that is just as inviting as the food. Kostas Tsampas and family are well-known for preparing perfectly cooked meats and they do not disappoint. Souvlaki skewers made from pork, chicken and bacon-wrapped chicken (which is insanely good) can be purchased by the "stick," pita or plate with choice of rice, fries or lemon potatoes. Other Greek specialties include Saganaki Cheese pan-seared over fire, Greek pork sausage, Tzatziki with cucumber and garlic as well as pork, chicken and lamb gyro. There are huge salads like Horiatiki (tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, kalamata olives, grape leaves and capers) and Cretan Salad (chopped tomatoes, crumbled feta, and Dakos or barley rusk served over a bed of mixed greens). For dessert, Greek doughnuts, called Loukoumades, get a drizzle of honey or Nutella. All of the food we tried at King Souvlaki was excellent which might explain the long lines. >>
