La Nacional, founded in 1868 by the Spanish Benevolent Society, is one of the oldest Spanish institutions in the country. The "cantina," as it is known, reopened as part of a 150th Anniversary celebration with a contemporary space featuring full bar, open kitchen and table seating while restaurant continues to focus on old world classics. Plates to share include smoky chorizo, wild mushroom croquetas, jumbo shrimp ajillo and grilled octopus with potato cream. Paellas for two to four people are also offered along with cheese plates, Spanish wines, sangrias and spritzers. This is one of the most authentic Spanish restaurants in the city and reasonably priced, which might explain why it is also a neighborhood favorite.
