Street foods of Japan are celebrated at Osaka Grub inside the Essex Street Market. This small stand specializes in Okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made with cabbage. The "Classic" comes with pork belly and shrimp. It's topped with two sauces, a Japanese BBQ sauce and mayo, with ginger and bonito flakes on top. Hashimaki, a handheld version, is wrapped around two chopsticks and is filled with your choice of bacon or mushrooms. Osaka Grub also serves excellent fried chicken. The boneless pieces are infused with garlic and ginger before being deep-fried until golden. It's fantastic. The chicken is also available as a slider served on a potato roll. Osaka Grub is open Tuesday thru Saturday from 11am-7pm and Sundays from 11am to 6pm. Some seating is available inside the market. The restaurant plans to move into the "Lowline," a subterranean park being built across the street from the market. - Thomas Rafael
