If you've ever been to the Latin Quarter in Paris, it's very reminiscent of parts of the East Village where the buildings are old, the streets narrow and filled with shops and restaurants. So, when we stopped in for a peek at Pardon My French, it felt as if we had just arrived at a true French bistro. On one side is a speakeasy bar where mixologist Simon Sebbah is creating some interesting cocktails, like "Dirty Tales" made with Brugal rum, Peychaud’s Bitters, Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur, grapefruit and lime. There is a lengthy wine list, with many from France, but Spain and Italy are also represented with most priced in the $30-$50 range. On the opposite side is the dining area. Exposed brick, tin ceilings and hardwood floors give the space a warm feel. A tiled counter is perfect for sharing a glass of wine and maybe nibbling on some meats and cheeses, including a duck rilette. Other small plates include crispy Dungeness crab cakes, thyme-roasted bone marrow, and Portobella mushrooms stuffed with goat cheese and quail eggs. Chef Yllan Laloum's entrees take on a mediterranean twist. Roasted lamb is paired with fava beans, peas with a rosemary jus, while duck breast is served with chickpea fritters and fried dates. We tried the grilled skirt steak which arrived rare accompanied by a fabulous peppercorn gravy. A side of cheesy polenta made for a perfect match. Save room for dessert, which includes a crepes souffle with almond cream, and a chocolate tart with spicy pecans. Pardon My French is perfect for a night out with friends or a romantic meal. - Thomas Rafael
