Cititour Review:
Pioneer Bar-B-Q is what you might expect to find in a neighborhood like Red Hook. It's a bit gruff and rough-around-the-edges with its wooden tables with inlaid maps of the world, red leather banquettes (the kind that stick to your back on a hot humid day), and a pool table in the back room. There's also dining and drinking in the backyard. The beers on tap are fabulous and served by the pint. We tried the Blue Point, a thick wheat beer, and a slighly sweeter brew, called Widier. The Bar-B-Q is good, but there are some misses. The ribs arrived a little too charred for my liking. The meat, while smoky, was rather flavorless, and I found myself drenching them in a tangy barbecue sauce provided tableside. On the other hand, the brisket, usually dry and dull, was juicy and flavorful. In fact, it's probably the best brisket I've tasted in quite some time. The burgers were also first-rate, thick and juicy, with a huge helping of freshly cut french fries. The mac and cheese, which was more like macaroni salad, was above par, along with the dirty rice. Pioneer Bar-B-Q is the kind of place where you instantly feel at home. A spot where neighbors drop in with scones. It's laid back, away from the rush of the city. In an area full of pioneers, this one is worth visiting.
