Cititour Review:

The schnitzel is getting a starring role these days with the arrival of Pita Joe.  This spot, about a block from Union Square, is a great stop for a quick bite for lunch or dinner.

You might think German when you hear the word schnitzel, but this one has a Middle Eastern twist.   Chicken cutlets pounded thin, breaded and then deep fried.  The chicken arrives crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.   It's then cut into pieces and placed in a traditonal pita, or a wheat pita.  The rest of the process is done Subway-style.  You can add some salad greens or beets, or maybe some fresh taboulleh (parsley-wheat salad) and then top it off with one of several house dressings ranging from hummus (chickpea dip) to zesty mayo.

When you're done, you'll have a nice plump sandwich.  I literally scoffed mine down in about two minutes flat.  That's how good it was.  But it was also on the pricey side, weighing in at just under eight bucks.

If frying is a turn-off, Pita Joe also offers grilled chicken and eggplant.  You can also have your sandwich stuffed with falafel.  And if you're going low-carb, you can get any of the above piled on top of a salad, including one made with cucumber, lemon and dill.  Then wash it all down several types of house lemonades; including mint and mango.

Judging by the crowds it looks like folks in the area were hankering for a place just like Pita Joe.
