Pigging out at Porchetta. The first thing you notice when you enter this East Village spot, aside from a giant painted pig on the wall, is the roast pork glistening in the display case by the counter. The next thing you notice is just how tight the space is with seating for five, and standing room for about eight more. It fills up quickly and don't be surprised to find a line right out the door. Just do one thing - get on it!
The namesake Porchetta sandwich ($9) is simply sensational. The crusty roll is packed with juicy pork, some of which is coated with garlic, rosemary and sage. It melts in you mouth triggering an immediate "ahhhh". You know the sound you make when you bite into something that you hope will never end. Be sure to ask for some extra crackling; the crispy bits of skin are filled with flavor.
Also on the menu; a mozzarella sandwich, beans, greens and crispy potatoes. And that's it. But you don't need much more.
While you may not be able to eat Porchetta everyday (and risk looking like a pig) this spot is well worth seeking out at least once a month!
