Cititour Review:
When you're looking for a real Italian sandwich head to Sergimmo. This salumeria is named after brothers, Sergio and Massimo. Their dad, Giovanni Badalamenti, came to America from Sicily where he opened a shop with his brother, Fillippo, in Astoria. Now the two sons are carrying on the tradition by making their own fresh mozzarella and ricotta while offering other Italian specialties like cured meats and homemade sausages.
A sign of a good restaurant is that always seems to be crowded. At Sergimmo you will be lucky if you are able to snag one of just a few tables. It's self-serve so be prepared to dive in. Behind the counter, workers are busy preparing sandwiches. While they are paninis, these sandwiches served on a crunch baguette can be ordered hot or cold.
I tried the Trentino, made with mortadella, provolone and marinated eggplant, while my son ordered the Massimo il Grande, grilled chicken, mozzarella and sundried tomatoes. The sandwiches are topped with extra virgin olive oil and a special basalmic sauce. Both were terrific. In all, we counted more than two dozen different types of paninis, ranging from grilled veggies to prosciutto di parma to imported tuna.
Italian classics like lasagna, chicken and meatball parmigiana are also offered along with salads and homemade pasta dishes like penne in a vodka sauce, tortellini alfredo or you can have your favorite pasta topped with fresh pesto and ricotta. Stuffed baby clams are also on the menu, as is a pan-fried artichoke omelet with black olives and mozzarella.
Desserts include mama's tiramisu, cannolis and ricotta-filled pastries called sfogliatelle. Now, that's Italian!
