Cititour Review:
Passing by Silver Spurs I couldn't help but notice a sign in the window, telling Bush to "go back to Texas," no doubt left behind by one of the many protestors that converged on the city along with Texas Republicans for the convention.
But once I looked around, I really wasn't too suprised. Afterall, this was Greenwich Village and just blocks from NYU where rebellion is fueled by testosterone and burgers.
Silver Spurs pulls off the Texas thing pretty well. The place has the look and feel of a southwestern diner, lots of chrome and stainless steel. Booths are covered in cow spots and giant fans hang from the ceiling. Even the menu talks a good talk, using words like "fer," as in "Y' all ask 'fer' some sour cream."
Helpings are quite healthy, with burgers so big, you'll have trouble taking a bite. I mean we're talking 10 ounces of beef. It's a little terrifying to look out, but once you take that first bite you'll wish it was even bigger. The meat is flavorful and juicy, served with a huge side of fries or jumbo onion rings ($7.50, an extra $1.25 if you ask 'fer' bacon). I counted some 30 varieties of those collosal burgers with names like "Stagecoach" and "Buckin' Bronco."
Silver Spurs is a meat and potatoes kind of place, serving up steak, pork chops, meatloaf, and southern fried chicken.
But you'll also see lots of folks chowing down on Greek salads. That's right. It seems the buckin' broncos running the show are Greek, but it's definitely not your run-of-the-mill Greek diner.
Even President Bush would be proud, if the protestors would let him in.
