Sometimes a little sweetness can lift you up and make you smile. The whimsical desserts at Sugar Sweet Sunshine have the power to do that. Cupcakes with a swirl of frosting in bright shades of pink, blue and yellow will put a smile on just about any kids' face (and adults too!). They come in flavors like pistachio, red velvet and one simply labeled "Pucker Up," for its lemony flavor, although they could use a bit more tartness to live up to the name. There are also old fashioned layer cakes like mom used to make that can be bought by the slice or entire cake. And a funky cafe to sit and enjoy a cup of joe. Prices are reasonable. We purchased three cupcakes for under five bucks. Sugar Sweet Sunshine is a ray of sunshine along the Lower East Side, an area where mom-and-pops can not only survive, but thrive.
