Since the bacon fad has hit America, pork has been the word on everyone’s lips. It’s no surprise, then, that someone would open a pork-centric restaurant. And where better than the trendy Village to set this pig free? Swine is a charcuterie-serving wine bar with a very chill vibe. The atmosphere plays to this downscale mood, with a Ping-Pong table that serves as a dining table in the downstairs room, and a more casual bar, featuring vintage arcade games (bring quarters!), upstairs. The walls are covered with rock and roll photos and posters. According to co-owner John McNulty, the restaurant is meant to be accessible and refined all at once. With an atmosphere like this, the refinement comes straight from the food. Chef Phil Conlon has created one of those four-star bar-nibbles menus that seems to be popping up on every street corner this side of Williamsburg. Of note are the pork belly (12), homemade potato chip nachos (7) and roasted bone marrow (15) from the small plates menu, and the swine chop with onions agrodolce (26) for those looking for something a bit heartier. Charcuterie and cheese platters (3 choice – 18, 5 choice – 27, 7 choice – 34) are definitely the highlight of the menu, with house-made charcuterie and salumi, and cheeses from Murray’s. House made condiments (3 each), from apricot mostarda to Espelette pepper jam, are ripe for the tasting. Some non-pork offerings are note-worthy as well. The bone marrow and brisket burger (18) should be on any carnivore’s to-try list. The highlight of the dessert menu is, of course, the bacon sundae! Though non-meat options, such as a berry crumble and a chocolate cake, are also on offer. Wine choices are composed of small-production bottles and half bottles, but there’s also wine and beer on tap. The list encompasses a fair range of new and old world wines, with a handful of offerings by the glass. Cocktails by Weisi Lin include “Pig in the City” (12), a combination of bacon-infused whiskey, vermouth and apple bitters. The verdict? Carnivores, take your marks! - Emily Monaco
