The Counter is bringing its custom built burgers to Times Square. The space on the corner of 41st and Broadway, formerly Juan Valdez, boasts tall ceilings, a small counter, and somewhat cramped seating. Still, you'll want to squeeze in for one of these burgers.Customers are handed clipboards to concoct their favorite burger combinations from a lengthy list of ingredients. It begins with the burger; Angus beef, chicken, turkey or a veggy patty. Then comes the cheese. We counted 12 varieties, including blue, feta, brie and horseradish cheddar. Then things really get complicated as you make your way through 30 toppings, 21 sauces and six types of buns. Good luck.
We opted for The Counter burger, a 1/3 lb patty served medium rare, which is a rarity these days, topped with lots of melted provolone, sauteed mushrooms and crispy onion strings. It's served with a lively sun-dried tomato vinaigrette. You'll need two hands to wrap around this burger and lots of napkins. But enjoy it because it will be gone before you know it. It's big enough to serve as its own meal, but you might want to order a side of cheese fries with Tillamook cheddar, or maybe a bowl of turkey chili with cranberries and scallions. The Counter also serves signature "Burgers in a Bowl". There also a kids menu featuring mini burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches and PB&J. Desserts include fruit cobblers that take abot ten minutes to prepare.
The counter is new to New York, but has nearly 20 locations in California. It's sure to be a hit with tourists and the theatre crowd looking for an inexpensive meal.
