Cititour Review:
In a city of bars and restaurants that take themselves very, very seriously, the Tippler is a refreshing breath of air. Beneath Chelsea Market, the Tippler is a new bar in a very old space marked by brick archways and industrial elements like highline train rails. The saloon that now occupies the former Nabisco factory storage room after more than 100 years of vacancy is an eclectic, accessible bar with an even more intriguing menu.
The drink menu has been carefully crafted – like the drinks on it – to reflect the fun and distinct atmosphere of the Tippler. From “Lushies” – blender drinks like the “Pearl Harbor Necklace” (Finlandia vodka, house melon syrup, pineapple and tapioca pearls) – to “Fast and Furious” shots like the Little Neck (citrus vodka, clam juice, lemon and horseradish stuffed tomato), these drinks are not the sort of things you were ordering at your old neighborhood bar.
But in the end, that's what founders Tad Carducci and Paul Tanguay want us to think of the Tippler as: a neighborhood joint where you can come and sip relatively modestly priced drinks – generally between 6 and 14 dollars a glass – while snacking on some homemade potato chips (3) or artisan cheeses (11 for 3), and hang out with your friends. Carducci himself plans to hang out there... and even, on occasion, stand behind a bar for the first time in five years.
