Wine bars and trendy restaurants are popping up all over what used to be a bit of a scary neighborhood: Avenue B has evolved since I knew it as a teenager, and wandering around Alphabet City in the evenings is an educational experience filled with smells and sights... and wine. In Vino to be exact: a wine bar and restaurant on 4th Street that offers a dark, wooden interior, a cozy atmosphere (European elbow-to-elbow cozy) and an excellent selection of wines.Ingredients are sourced from excellent suppliers – often the New York City farmer's markets – so stick to dishes that feature a key product, like the Caprese Salad (10) with buffalo mozzarella, or the Platto di Carne (18) with Italian mortadella, prosciutto, bresaola and speck. Mains range from pastas and rices like the Risotto of the Day (17) and porcini ravioli in truffle cream sauce (17) to grilled rack of lamb with red wine sauce (22) and salmon in lemon caper sauce (18). Wine lovers should be sure to ask the knowledgeable staff for a suggestion on what to pair with your wine or dish of choice.
